Take good care of your hardwood furniture, and keep it beautiful for a lifetime and beyond.
Here are a few tips...
- Keep humidity levels in your home constant – at about 25 to 35 percent. Running a humidifier in the winter and an air conditioner in the summer can help.
- Keep furniture away from radiators and fireplaces and out of direct sunlight.
- Dust your furniture regularly with a soft cloth (old T-shirts or diapers are great) moistened with a few drops of water or a combination of one part lemon oil and three parts olive oil. Always dust with the grain.
- Clean wood once a month with a water and gentle hand soap mixture.
- Stay away from alcohol, ammonia, and silicone-based cleaning products – they penetrate the wood and can damage the finish.
- Always lift lamps and other objects to move them off furniture; sliding will scratch.
- Consider a professional buff and polish once or twice a year.
- Use pads or coasters to prevent water rings, spills, and stains.
- Always lift – don't drag – furniture to move it.
- Avoid placing plastic or rubber objects on wood finishes.
